Abstract

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances that interfere with
the synthesis, secretion, transport, binding, or elimination of natural hormones
responsible for maintaining homeostasis, reproduction, development, and behavior.
This paper examines the mechanisms through which EDCs, such as bisphenol A
(BPA), phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and pesticides, alter hormonal
balance and impair reproductive health in both males and females. Exposure to these
chemicals has been linked to hormonal imbalances, infertility, abnormal sexual
development, menstrual irregularities, and increased risks of reproductive cancers.
The review highlights the vulnerability of prenatal and pubertal stages to EDC
exposure and underscores the importance of regulatory measures and public
awareness to minimize risks. Understanding the pathways and dose-dependent effects
of EDCs is essential for developing preventive strategies and safeguarding
reproductive well-being.
